What can we expect for the rest of 2009? Perhaps a return to basics.
2008 was an incredibly turbulent year that brought a great deal of challenges. We have seen brokers collapse, government bailouts, the nationalisation of banks and lenders, massive asset write-downs, layoffs and huge financial losses for nearly all investors. No one will question that it was a year that reshaped the entire global financial services industry. So what can we expect for the rest of 2009?

Omgeo ALERT - New Markets/Validations coming soon
In Q1 ALERT will be updated with expanded coverage of instruments, depositories and market rules and will enforce tighter controls on existing instructions within the system. Omgeo CTM Settlement Notification (SN) Adds New Functionality
Omgeo is pleased to introduce new Omgeo CTM functionality for non-SWIFT enabled third parties. The new functionality allows you to receive settlement notifications via secure ftp as well as in a CSV format. With the new release, you can also send settlement notifications prior to a trade reaching a “Match Agreed” state in Omgeo CTM, which is critical in short settlement-cycle markets. This project builds on the previous Omgeo CTM Settlement Notification release that enables clients to send a SWIFT message to up to 15 third parties. To find out more, click here.

Dutch Pension Fund Mn Services live on Omgeo ProtoColl
We are proud to announce that Mn Services are now live on Omgeo ProtoColl. By using this system, Mn Services gains tremendous insight into its exposures and risk profiles.
Omgeo ProtoColl client Mn Services manages assets totaling EUR 65 billion (August 2008) and looks after pensions of more than 1.1 million individuals and more than 33,000 employers, making it one of Europe’s leading groups in the field of asset management and pension administration.
“After reviewing some of the available solutions for collateral management, we determined Omgeo ProtoColl would best suit our needs,” said Muhittin Elvan, head of risk control at Mn Services. “Not only is the technology and functionality the most comprehensive, but because the product was designed specifically with investment management and hedge fund communities in mind, it was the solution that best met our specific needs. | Spotlight: Flight to Safety |
|
Flight to Safety: In today’s market, with government bailouts and the collapse of a number of major players in the global financial services industry - it is no wonder that there is hype about a ‘flight to safety’ in the securities industry.
This flight to safety has caused many in the industry to take extreme actions. We have seen hedge funds turn to the diversified banks instead of using an independent broker/dealer. Also, many institutional investors are returning to equities, fixed income and cash in their portfolios instead of holding hedge funds. Acquisitions are becoming more frequent in the financial services industry in order to survive, there is greater government intervention and many big names have already gone into administration.
The reason for this shift in mentality is the lack confidence from all sides of the market. It is unknown how long “crisis” will actually last and in this hugely volatile market there is a great deal of uncertainty. Many economists, analysts and industry experts have made predictions that the crisis will end in one, two or even five years, but the truth is no one knows. Investors have little confidence in “risky” investments (i.e. complex derivatives, hedge funds, private equity) and are seeking “safe-havens” in more secure ones (i.e. cash and highly liquid government bonds).
With that said, it is important to note that this ‘flight to safety’ is not a universal opinion. Many organisations are still seeking high returns and therefore will to continue to manage diverse portfolios in order to generate higher returns – still mindful, but regardless of the level of risk involved.
Omgeo understands the need to diversify and the importance of managing risk in these volatile and uncertain market conditions. Our solutions support a broad range of asset classes regardless of your investment strategies or market including equity, fixed income and derivatives.
